General Synod Elections
A campaign has been launched to encourage "people with a very big heart" to stand for election to the General Synod of the Church of England. Containing 378 lay and clergy members, and passing Measures that have the same effect as those of Parliament, the General Synod continues to play an essential role in the life of the country as well as the Church. It will be dissolved at the end of the July 2010 group of sessions in York, and a new Synod elected for a five-year term in September/October, and inaugurated in November.
Under the slogan 'Be Part of the Big Picture', new resources include a five-minute DVD filmed at General Synod in February 2010, featuring contributions from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, Business Committee chair Preb Kay Garlick, outgoing members of the Houses of Laity and Clergy, and national journalists. Copies are being sent to dioceses to be available for viewings in all 718 Church of England deaneries.
A new website full of vital information for those considering standing has been uploaded at www.generalsynodelections2010.org It includes an online videocast of the DVD and a free downloadable poster and leaflet, so that parishes can join in the campaign to encourage full representation from across the Church.
Sea Sunday 11th July 2010 – International Year of the Seafarer
The United Nations International Maritime Organisation has designated this year as
‘The International Year of the Seafarer’.
Sea Sunday is our opportunity to tell congregations about the vital role that seafarers play in bringing us so many of our daily needs. It is also an opportunity to inform people of the care which the Church offers to seafarers, to pray for those who work on the sea, and to offer our own support if appropriate.
Loneliness, danger, separation from loved ones. These are just some of the problems seafarers face. The Mission to Seafarers, a charity and part of the Anglican Church, is there worldwide offering them help and support.
A pack of Sea Sunday resources will shortly be (if not, already) available from a new website: www.seasunday.org – which will include sermon notes, prayers and children’s material.

If a church group can't make Staying Alive there is brand new festival called Northern Saints which will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend 27th - 30th August. The site has its own showers, toilets and two great indoor venues the largest having a 600 seating capacity with state of the art sound, lighting and visual equipment.

Loads of activities are being planned and these will be delivered by experienced trained people from across the north of England. The site will be divided into villages and groups and individuals will be assigned to a village on arrival and introduced to their hosts who will be there to ensure youngsters get the most out of the festival programme, as well as offering all kinds of other support and encouragement.

During each day a full programme will take place which will include worship in different styles, workshops including circus skills, activities, games, competitions and loads of time to chill out around the site. Catering facilities will be available or you may choose to cater for yourselves.

You will recall Bishop Martin informing you of his plans to call a Clergy Conference next year on Tuesday 14th-Thursday 16th June at Edinburgh University. The theme of the Conference will be “Called to be Confident”, and will reflect our having celebrated the festival of Pentecost on the previous Sunday. I am delighted to say that a most interesting group of speakers have agreed to help us explore this theme, they include: the Archbishop of York, Gerard Hughes SJ,
Stephen Cotterell (who will then be Bishop of Chelmsford) and Sheila Watson (Archdeacon of Canterbury). You will be receiving further information regarding booking etc in the autumn.

I have been asked to include the following in this edition of the Bulletin.

(a) From Ecclesiastical Insurance

Ecclesiastical Insurance Ministry Bursary Awards
For the 23rd year since the establishment of its Ministry Bursary Awards, Ecclesiastical is proud to announce that the applications for the 2011 awards are now being accepted on our website at www.ecclesiastical.com
We are pleased to be able to continue to offer our support to the members of the clergy and have, this year, decided to extend our awards scheme to also include applications from Bishops, Deans and Archdeacons to give more members of the clergy the opportunity to apply.
Due to the nature of their work and the demands of busy ministries, most members of the clergy rarely manage to make sufficient time to carry out imaginative projects to improve their ministries or to simply take time to refresh themselves through a spiritual journey. The Ministry Bursary Awards are here to help them achieve just that.
Applications for Ecclesiastical’s Ministry Bursary Awards will be accepted between 1st April and 30th September 2010, the judging will take place in November 2010 and awards will be issued in December 2010 and January 2011.
To find out more about the awards and how to enter, follow this link: www.ecclesiastical.com/ourproducts/insurance/churchinsurance/mba/index.aspx
Please feel free to pass on this information to anyone interested in applying for the awards in your Diocese.

(g) From Jennie Jones

Beyond the Barricades is approaching its 20th anniversary and rehearsals are in full swing for a big celebration of two decades of exploring new ways of sharing the Gospel through the media of dance, sign and drama. A Tyneside ecumenical group of Christians drawn from many different churches, Beyond the Barricades began with coordinators, Revds Anne and Derek Marr who then handed the baton on to the current coordinators Kevin and Oonagh Atkinson. The group, which numbers around 30 and whose age-range is from 10 to 80+, have worked in many locations, large and small. They have helped to lead worship in many churches and at numerous diocesan events. They presented street theatre and supported the worship at the Mothers’ Union celebration at the Great Northern Showground in Harrogate in 2000 and had a major input at the Arena for the Roman Catholic Millennium Confirmation. Some of the younger members have been involved in diocesan youth exchanges with young people in Europe, exploring the gospel together. The group’s last major diocesan event was working in the streets at the Mothers’ Union York Provincial Pilgrimage to Lindisfarne last year. No event is too large or too small, Beyond the Barricades is there to be a servant to the Church whenever and wherever it is invited.

Tickets for the celebration at Brunswick Methodist Church at 6pm on Saturday 26 June are available from Jennie Jones (0191 267 7829) and Kevin and Oonagh Atkinson
(0191 483 2679). Tickets are £3 (children up to 11 years and accompanied by an adult are free).
