Advisory Committee for the care of churches
The Committee has two objectives: care for church buildings and churchyards in their own right, and enabling them to be vehicles for promoting the mission of the church.
Early consultation with the Committee is strongly urged - members are eager to help and advise rather than seem to pose a hurdle en route to faculty. Small groups of Committee members often visit churches where a project is proposed and, if it is major, they work with the parish as the project develops. The Committee feels strongly that the Church of England’s legal exemption from certain demands of the secular planning system is a privilege worth striving to retain. Exemption from one set of demands means that our own standards must be at least equally high, and to building standards we add, of course, our view of the church’s calling.
It is the belief of the Committee that church buildings do not belong to the congregations charged with their maintenance - and possible development - at this particular juncture in history, but that their ownership is much wider. They are the churches of the whole community in the parishes they serve, and they belong to past and future generations as much as to the present. And primarily, they belong to God.
